About the Artist
Helen is part of the original families within the Alyawarr Language Region, central Northern Territory. She grew up on country and learnt her entire life about the incredibly complex knowledge of Aboriginal culture. She was fortunate to have handed this thousands of year old knowledge from her grandmothers, mother and aunties. Helen’s mother Nelly (skin name Petyarre) was the main leader in the Alyawarr Region where women would go for advice and guidance, this was based on her huge knowledge and understanding of traditions and customs. Her role also came with great responsibility to lead ceremonies and to hand her knowledge to other family members across all the homelands, including her daughters.
Helen’s artwork is based on this family tradition and reflects the deep connection to country which she has been living her entire life. Her artwork is full of information about bushfoods, Bush medicine plants and ceremonial customs. By walking through country and living out in the bush, her stories are based on real experiences.
